Legacy of Resistance ✊🏽

This Wednesday, June 12th, marks a Philippine national holiday, also known as "Independence" Day. While it's true that on this day in 1898, Emilio Aguinaldo declared the Philippines' independence from Spain, the fight for sovereignty continued. Shortly after, the Philippines entered the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) against the United States, and the struggle against colonization persisted.

Our session this week will dive into the history of resistance against colonial rule in the Philippines. Long before June 12, 1898, Filipinos across the archipelago fought Spanish colonization through numerous uprisings for hundreds of years.

Do you have any stories of resistance passed down in your family? Resistance can encompass more than just fighting and warfare. What do you know about your great-grandparents who lived during this era? How do you think these events might have affected your grandparents' lives? What might we be carrying within our nervous systems, passed down through generations?

For our online Chrysalis Kali session today, bring any family stories you'd like to share or questions you have about this period. It's important to acknowledge and hold space for the fact that family histories can be fragmented. Family members may be hesitant to discuss the past, or loved ones may have passed away. While we might not have had the opportunity to access these stories directly in our lineage, learning and uncovering history helps us imagine and understand how these historical events impacted our ancestors.
